Principal Investigator 
Dr. Mohammad Arjmand, PhD, PEng, CRC

Dr. Arjmand is an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia and the Canada Research Chair in Advanced Materials and Polymer Engineering. Dr. Arjmand obtained his PhD from the University of Calgary, Canada in Chemical (Polymer) Engineering in 2014. After his PhD, he carried out Postdoctoral work at the University of Calgary (2014-2017) and the University of Toronto (2017-2018), and was a Guest Researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Germany (July-August 2015). Since July 2018, he has started a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus.


Postdoctoral Fellows

Dr. Seyyedarash Haddadi

Dr. Seyyedarash Haddadi obtained his Ph.D. degree in Polymer Engineering at Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran in 2019. His Ph.D. thesis was focused on the Synthesis and Application of Graphene-based Carbon Hollow Spheres for Self-healing Coatings Application. Research interests of Arash are Polymer Nanocomposites, Rheology of Polymers, Self-healing Protective Coatings, Polymers Characterization and Processing, and Surface Modification. In NPNL, as a Mitace Elevate postdoctoral research fellow with ZEN Graphene Solutions, he is working on the development of graphene nanomaterials and their polymer nanocomposites.

Dr. Mohammad Aboonasr Shiraz

Dr. Mohammad Shiraz received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada. His Ph.D. thesis was focused on “Electrode and Interface Design for Lithium/Sodium-Selenium Batteries”. Mohammad’s research interests are energy conversion and storage, nanomaterials, polymer nanocomposites, material characterization and processing. In NPNL, he is working on developing graphene nanomaterials/quantum dots and their polymer nanocomposites.

Dr. Chungyeon Cho

Dr. Chungyeon Cho obtained his Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, Canada in 2021. He also received his Master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Alberta, Canada in 2015. His Ph.D. thesis was focused on “Investigation of polyetherimide’s thermal degradation and fabrication of thermal end-of-life sensor for fire protective clothing”. Chungyeon’s research interests are polymer degradation and aging at various parameters (temperature, UV, or humidity) and a simply-operated-sensor fabrication. He is working as a research engineer in the Plastic Recycling Research Cluster from the Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) at the University of British Columbia under Dr. Abbas Milani and Dr. Mohammad Arjmand.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PhD Students

 

Farhad Ahmadijokani

Farhad received his master`s degree in polymer engineering from the Sharif University of Technology (2017). His specialty is the development of friction composites with enhanced mechanical and tribological features. He completed his bachelor`s study in chemical engineering at Shiraz University working on water treatment as the final project. In NPNL, he is working on the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks towards dye adsorption.

 

Ahmadreza Ghaffarkhah

Ahmadreza received his master’s degree in petroleum engineering from the Amirkabir of Technology. After his master’s, he worked as a laboratory technician at the polymer-based drilling fluid laboratory of the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI). Ahmadreza has received several awards from Iran’s National Elites Foundation (INEF). His current research interest is on the electromagnetic interference shielding of transparent PEDOT: PSS films and their polymer nanocomposites holding carbonaceous nanomaterials.

Amir Hosein Ahmadian Hoseini

Amir received his MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary. Thereafter, he worked for a Canadian startup company as a lead R&D research engineer for almost two years. Amir’s expertise is mostly focused on the fabrication of nanostructured materials, conductive nanocomposites, Lithium mining, metal-organic framework (MOF), optimization, data analysis, and machine learning development. Amir is supervised by Dr. Arjmand and co-supervised by Dr. Liu towards the development of solid-state batteries.

Saeed Ghaderi

Saeed received his B.Sc. degree from the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), Tehran, Iran in 2016 and M.Sc. degree in Polymer Engineering from the Sharif University o Technology (SUT), Tehran, Iran in 2019. Saeed’s M.Sc. thesis was focused on the synthesis and characterization of water-soluble copolymers as rheological and thermal modifiers. He is experienced in the synthesis of nanostructures, testing and investigating structural, mechanical, thermal, rheological, and corrosion inhibition properties, and polymer processing. In NPNL, he is focusing on innovative 3D-printed polymer nanocomposites with enhanced sensing and actuating features.

Majed Amini

Majed received his B.Sc. degree from the Sahand University of Technology (SUT), Tabriz, Iran, in 2015. He got involved in a project on ODH (Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane) and synthesis 2D nanoparticles. He also received his M.Sc. degree in Polymer Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology (SUT), Tehran, Iran, in 2018. His master’s dissertation was on in-situ polymerization and multifunctional polymer nanocomposites. Notably, he has three years of experience as an R&D member at the biggest tire company in Iran (KBTC). In NPNL, he will focus on the synthesis and 2D nanomaterials and innovative 3D-printed polymer nanocomposites with superior electromagnetic interference shielding.

Milad Goodarzi

Milad received his BSc and MSc degrees in Materials Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology. He has been among the best students in both degrees and won the gold medal in Material Science and Engineering University Olympiad in Iran, as his most important achievement during these degrees. His MSc thesis was focused on the fabrication of graphene nanosheets with different surface polarities and their influence on the morphology and electrical and mechanical properties of PS/EOC immiscible polymer blends. In NPNL, he is working on the influence of nanomaterials and polymer nanocomposites on the yield of methane production in wastewater treatment processes under the supervision of Dr. Arjmand and co-supervision of Dr. Eskicioglu


Parisa Najmi

Parisa received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Polymer Engineering from the Amirkabir University of Technology. She has been among the top students during her master’s degree. She has valuable experiences in synthesizing various kinds of resins and polymers, specifically the bio-based ones. Her focus is on synthesizing and modifying carbon-based nanomaterials like carbon nanotube, graphene oxide, and their applications in corrosion. Now, in NPNL, Parisa is working on polymer processing and the usage of nanomaterials in electromagnetic interference shielding.


Seyyed Alireza Hashemi

Alireza’s MSc project was about investigating the effect of SWCNTs alignment on the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of epoxy-based nanocomposites over the  X-band. Afterward, he served as the senior researcher in the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences with widespread international collaborations. He is the recipient of various scholarships and awards, where the most significant ones are the Research Scholarship of Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) and the Excellence Prize of the Asian Science Park Association. Alireza is a pioneering nanotechnologist with more than one hundred publications, where his research focus is mainly based on the development of advanced carbonaceous (graphene nanomaterials, carbon/graphene quantum dots and carbon nanotubes), polymeric, metallic and hybrid nanomaterials toward energy, sensing and shielding applications. His main research in NPNL is on the synthesis of graphene and the development of its polymer electromagnetic shields.

Navid Keshmiri

Navid received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Polymer Engineering from the Amirkabir University of Technology. He has studied the adhesion of bio and hemocompatible coatings on metallic implants in his master’s. After his master, he has been involved in commercializing mold release agents in Iran for the first time.  Moreover, he is experienced in the synthesis and modification of carbonaceous nanomaterials and MOFs in anti-corrosion nanocomposites. In NPNL, Navid is working on the synthesis of novel nanostructures and nanocomposites with enhanced corrosion-resistant properties under the supervision of Dr. Arjmand and co-supervision of Dr. Milani.
